In the bustling democracy of our modern world, where voices clamor for equality and autonomy, the concept of authority can sometimes seem distant or even contentious. But as believers, it’s crucial to recognize the profound significance of authority, both in our spiritual lives and our everyday existence.

Jesus, the ultimate authority, imparted to us a divine commission, a mantle of power and responsibility that transcends human understanding. Yet, to fully grasp and wield this authority, we must first humble ourselves under His sovereign rule.

Submission to Divine Authority

The Scriptures resound with the declaration of Christ’s supreme authority. In Matthew 28:18, Jesus proclaims, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” Here lies the foundational truth: our authority flows from His. To exercise authority effectively, we must align ourselves with His will and purpose.

Disobedience, the antithesis of submission, fractures our connection with God’s authority. It is a perilous path, born of rebellion and pride, which diminishes His glory and restricts His power in our lives. The Bible warns us in Romans 13:1-2 that rebelling against God-given authority invites judgment upon ourselves, highlighting the importance of obedience as a cornerstone of faith.

Freedom in Submission

Contrary to the world’s perception, true freedom is found not in rebellion but in submission to divine authority. Ephesians 5:21 exhorts believers to “submit to one another out of reverence for Christ,” recognizing the beauty and efficacy of voluntary surrender to God and His appointed leaders.

In the ecclesiastical realm, spiritual authority is entrusted to leaders for the edification and guidance of the body of Christ. Hebrews 13:17 urges believers to have confidence in their spiritual leaders and to submit to their authority, recognizing their accountability before God.

Exercising Spiritual Authority

As believers, we are endowed with spiritual authority over demonic forces through the name of Jesus. Luke 10:19 assures us, “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy.” This authority empowers us to resist the devil and to cast out demons in the name of Jesus.

However, it is crucial to operate within the boundaries of God’s authority, as exemplified in Acts 19:13-16. The failed attempt by the sons of Sceva to cast out demons serves as a stark reminder of the importance of aligning ourselves with Jesus’ authority.

Steps to Deliverance

Deliverance from demonic influence requires humility, repentance, and a fervent reliance on God’s authority. By renouncing sin, forgiving others, and commanding demons to leave in the name of Jesus, we assert our spiritual authority and usher in freedom and healing.

Let us, therefore, embrace the authority bestowed upon us by our Lord and Savior, submitting wholeheartedly to His divine rule. In doing so, we unleash the fullness of God’s power in our lives and participate in His redemptive work in the world.
